THE BIG IDEA

WHY IS THE CHURCH CALLED REDEMPTION? WHY IS THAT WORD SO CENTRAL?

We hear the word redemption a lot in films, books, even in casual conversation. Usually it refers to a dramatic turnaround: someone has messed up, ended up in darkness or pain, but finds a way to make things right.

We love those stories because they speak to something deep inside us.

But redemption isn’t just a plot device. At its core, redemption is about our rescue. It’s about being set free from something that holds us back, whether that’s guilt, regret, shame, or destructive choices. We’ve all experienced moments where we wish we could rewind and start again. The truth is, most of us know what it feels like to fall short, to not be who we hoped we’d be.

The Christian story offers a powerful message of redemption.

It says that we don’t have to fix ourselves first before we can be forgiven. In fact, redemption begins exactly where we are: in the middle of the mess. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection are described as God’s way of buying us back, restoring what was broken, and offering a fresh start that is lasting. It means we can walk through life knowing every day that we are loved and accepted by the God who created us.

But the Christian idea of redemption is not just personal, it’s cosmic.

The whole world is being renewed and rescued by God and we get to participate. Part of our dream as Redemption London is that God will work through us to bring grace, peace and hope into schools, workplaces, families and whole communities across the city.

Maybe all this makes you curious, or maybe not. That’s okay. Exploring redemption doesn’t require blind faith, but a willingness to ask questions and take a next step. Read one of the gospel accounts for yourself. Talk with someone you trust who follows Jesus. Or simply pause and ask, “What would it mean for me to be truly free?”
