Two ways to live: Hagar and Ishmael represent human effort—anxiety, contempt, slavery. Sarah and Isaac represent God's achievement—joy, hope, freedom. One depends on what you can achieve; the other celebrates what God has done.

Hagar fled into the wilderness, mistreated and alone. The Angel of the Lord found her there and she called God "El Roi"—the God who sees me. God doesn't just see our circumstances; He sees us personally and comes with rescue and blessing.

God invited Abraham to pray not just to get answers, but to form something in him—concern for people, mercy, justice. He wants to implant His character into us through prayer, qualities that get passed on to our children and those around us.

Everything we put our hope in can fail—money, popularity, achievements. But God's promise is completely unchanging. Even when we fail, He's faithful again and again, even to the point where He Himself was willing to die in our place.

Abraham could be incredibly generous with Lot because he knew God had his back. It's much easier to be generous when you trust that God is promising to provide for you richly. True generosity flows from confidence in God's provision.

God is a God of blessing who works 24/7 around the globe. The word "blessed" appears five times in just three verses of Genesis 12. God wants to bless Abraham, but He also wants to bless the whole world.

When Jesus called the fishermen, He said, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." That same invitation extends to us. Jesus wants to transform everyone who follows Him into someone who brings His message to the world.
